About the Camargue Horses
The Camargue region of the South of France is famous for the beautiful Wild White Horses that roam the area. You will not need to be a horse lover to be transfixed while watching and photographing this world renowned and noble breed splashing through the shallow waters of the marshlands and lakes. It may be possible to photograph the Mares and Foals and also the Gardians (French Cowboys) working with the horses in their natural habitat. You will not be disappointed with the stunning results you can capture on camera.
All photography sessions are in the early morning and early evening, dawn and dusk, to ensure that we do not miss the spectacular light and different backgrounds. The Camargue is a haven for any lover of nature and the wild. It is situated on the coast of Southern France and consists of wonderfully unspoiled wetlands, natural lakes and marshland and extraordinary wildlife.

Provence and the White Horses Photo Tour Schedule
Arrive in Marseille, France on May 19, 2019, by noon.
Depart from Marseille on May 24, 2019, after 5 PM
Daily Tour Schedule
Today is a Sunday, and you will be picked up at your hotel or the Marseilles airport at 12noon today. Once we’ve made the pickup we’ll begin our photographic tour of Provence.
Our first stop is Parc ornithologique de Pont de Gau. The Ornithological Park is the ideal site to discover, observe and photograph a plethora of bird species, which include hundreds of pink flamingos in their natural habitat. Ponds, swamps, lawns, channels, reed beds, salt marshes all create this vast 60-hectare area, entirely devoted to the discovery of nature and birds of the Camargue. It is on the Park’s trails, where the peaceful silence is only broken by the bird songs, that you can observe, even closer still, birds that seem to ignore you entirely.
Day 2 and Day 3
We have two sessions each day with the horses, one at first light and one late in the day. After the action at night, we take images of the herd on their own or in small groups, silhouetted against the sunset.
For the next 2 ½ days, we will photograph at least a dozen Wild White Horses running through the marsh heading straight towards you and your camera. It is an exhilarating experience. The horses will make several passes in front of your camera. Multiple runs by the horses will let you tweak your technique and increase your number of “keepers”. We will also take the time to make images of the Camargue Cowboys (Gardians) dressed in their traditional Camargue shirts and hats, trident in hand, surrounded by the herd.
Your sessions with the horses will consist of the following scenes:
- A shallow pond where the horses run towards us and kick up water showing the full power of their stride.
- Time on the beach having the horses run on the sand back and forth with the sea as a backdrop
- Running out of the ocean towards us as we stand on the beach.
- In open fields, the horses will run back and forth with a bare backdrop and grass fields.
- Stallions are standing on their back legs, alone and with another stallion.
Saving our favorite till the last day; Today begins with a morning Stallion Shoot. This session is a unique opportunity to see the White Horses entwined at full height. The Stallions have a feisty temperament and often spar with each other. The final morning session ends with us being up close with the horses allowing for more intimate poses for portraits with several different lighting scenarios.
After our horse session, we will check out of our hotel and head to our next hotel in Provence.
After our final horse shoot on the morning, we will head back to the hotel and pack up to head to our next location in Provence. In the afternoon and into the night we will spend our time around Avignon capturing the history and architecture of Avignon and the surrounding small French villages. We will end our day at the massive aqueduct for a sunset photo shoot over this unusual structure.
Today we will spend the day in Provence visiting towns like Gordes, the Plateau de Sault and the surrounding quaint farmland between Valensole, Roussillon, and Avignon
Today we have one final photo shoot in Provence before we head to the airport in Marseilles. Please schedule your flights home after 5 pm. If you cannot get a connecting flight home, we can drop you off at one of Marseilles local hotels near the airport.

People are Talking About Wildlife Workshops
Thanks, Jeff. We had a fabulous time, and managed to get some great images out of the thousands we shot.
It is hard to describe the thrill of a mountain lion tearing through the brush and jumping into the water about 30 feet from you. This has been the best photography workshop I have attended. I look forward to returning to Kalispell in the winter next year.
This workshop exceeded my expectations in every regard. Jeff makes the entire experience exciting, educational and fun. He always is there to help. I can hardly wait for my next adventure with Jeff.
Almost impossible to explain to others how great this workshop is – you just have to go experience it!
The workshop was a great learning experience. Even though I have been photographing for a while, I still learned some great tricks and techniques, that can take a good image to a great image. That’s was exactly what I was looking for.
I had an art show last weekend that a showed a few of my new images from the workshop and already sold two of them. So that’s a great start.
I can’t begin to tell you how much I LOVED the opportunity to photograph those beautiful animals. Each session was thrilling and I’m really looking forward to the January workshop.
Thank you so much for a great workshop! You are very talented and it’s been a pleasure learning on your winter wildlife workshop.
Thank you for a great workshop. It provided an opportunity to get up close and personal with more animals in a smaller amount of time than otherwise possible. It would take a lifetime to see some of these animals, and most of them from too far away for a great photograph. You ran a great workshop and it won’t be the last that I attend!
If you feel that your photographic technique needs help, consider going with Jeff. He will help you with your technique and also will give you pointers about what makes a good picture. I can still hear him say “ears!”. If you want to know why, sign up with him. Plus he knows all the very good restaurants around there. After a light lunch, the nice dinners with our fellow attendees were welcome.
Thank you for such an amazing experience. Thanks for helping me get some exciting photos. I enjoyed the small group of photographers and your knowledge of Lightroom. I am signed up for another of your workshops next April.
