Fall Foliage Photography – Vermont

Glorious colors, cascading streams, and more = classic Vermont

Vermont Photo Workshop Overview

I’ll be working with the incomparable David Middleton (he wrote that part) and the best equine photographer I’ve ever seen, Lisa Cueman on this terrific workshop in Vermont. We’ve been doing this workshop together for many years, and it is always special. I mean fall in Vermont is a spectacle by itself and throw David, Lisa and me into the mix, and it is a spectacular spectacle! David calls this his backyard workshop, with good reason it is! We’ll take the class to all my favorite locations- tumbling mountain streams, misty ponds, colorful meadows and old barns. We also go to the wonderful old dairy farm that David did an entire book on to photograph the old-time Vermont of generations past. As a special treat and with Lisa’s help we will also photograph two magnificent horses- running against a background of colorful trees and portraits of them with a dramatic black background.

Included/Not Included

The fee includes 3.5 days of photography instruction with classroom sessions critiquing your images and “how to” help with your photography.

We visit David’s favorite places, including tumbling streams, quiet lakes, rolling hills, and quaint villages. As a special treat, David takes us to the 250-year-old hill farm that he has been exclusively photographing for several years. Almost a square mile in size, the farm is a photographer’s dream, with beautiful old barns, calves and yearlings, wild meadows and woods, an old sugarhouse, miles of stone walls, and pastures lined with colorful sugar maples. We have complete access to photograph whatever strikes our fancy.

Transportation to the workshop and during the workshop are not included. Your local accommodations and meals are also not included.

Equipment and Gear

You should bring lots of energy and a lot of memory cards! You are going to photograph a lot more than you imagine.

A tripod is recommended. A wide angle lens and a mid range zoom like a 70-200mm will be your best friends for much of the workshop. A circular polarizor is an essential piece of gear to photograph the streams.

We’ll normally shoot regardless of the weather and showers are certainly possible, so you should be prepared for that. Waterproof shoes or boots will be useful. Dress in layers as it can be chilly in the morning and then warm later in the day.

There is not going to be a great deal of physical exertion on this trip. One location that we will likely use has a hike of about 200 yards with a moderate hill to climb. We’ll be able to take it slow and we’ve never lost anyone…yet!

Ready To Photograph Fall in Vermont?

The foliage can be quite amazing and we’ve picked what is normally the prime time for the workshop. As much as we try to control the weather and the colors of the leaves, we’ve not managed that yet… But, we will have a lot of fun together and we will make some great images and you’re going to leave a better photographer than when you arrived!
